On 2 October 2023, SF World NGO announced its support for a project turning biodegradable waste into biohydrogen in Benin. The project, carried out in collaboration with the Laboratory of Energetics and Applied Mechanics (LEMA) at the University of Abomey-Calavi, aims to address challenges in waste management and sustainable energy production.
Biohydrogen is a combustible gas that can be produced from organic waste such as food waste, agricultural waste and sewage sludge. It is considered a renewable and sustainable energy source, as it does not produce greenhouse gases.
The project, to be implemented over a two-year period, will involve installing a biohydrogen production unit using organic waste from the city of Cotonou. The unit will use innovative technology capable of producing biohydrogen from wet, organic-rich waste.
